Diabetes and insulin resistance

Heart attacks heart represent 60% and stroke by 25% of deaths in people with diabetes. A 1998 study reported that patients with type 2 diabetes and no history of heart disease have the same risk of a heart attack at age seven than non-diabetics with heart disease.

Insulin resistance in the long run, even without type 2 diabetes, appears to have significant harmful effects on the heart. This condition occurs when insulin levels are normal to high, but the body is unable to use insulin to regulate blood sugar metabolism and keep it for energy. In such cases, the body compensates for this by increasing insulin levels (hyperinsulinemia), which in turn increases triglycerides and lowers HDL cholesterol. Normally, insulin stimulates the release of two substances, endothelin and nitric oxide, which are important to keep open the arteries elastic. Insulin resistance can cause an imbalance in these substances. [For more information, see chapter egalenia encyclopedia on Diabetes: Type I and Diabetes: Type II].

Homocysteine

Abnormal levels of the amino acid homocysteine in the blood are closely linked to increased risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. Homocysteine can damage the inside of the arteries and promote blood clotting. You can find high levels of this amino acid in the presence of deficiency of vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid. Some experts believe that high levels of homocysteine are only indicators, not causes, of heart disease. However, some studies have suggested that there is a strong association between this factor and heart disease.

Obesity

Obesity is associated with hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol levels and lack of exercise, all factors contributing to myocardial infarction. Abdominal obesity (“curve of happiness”) is a higher risk. In fact, a 2000 study stated that men with a waist size over 90 cm. and high triglyceride levels (plus 2 mmol/L) are at increased risk of developing heart disease in the next five years.
Obesity in children is a risk factor for future heart problems larger than a family history of heart disease. People who are overweight in midlife may not completely reduce the risk of coronary heart disease later, even though losing excess weight. People who are overweight or obese have high levels of C-reactive protein, an indicator substance of inflammation and a marker of heart disease.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a disease that affects one in every ten women of reproductive age. It is characterized by the presence of obesity, ovulatory dysfunction and insulin resistance.

Not all women with PCOS share the same symptoms. Some are infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and / or irregular bleeding, infertility because of not ovulating increased hair growth on face, chest, stomach and back, ovarian cysts, acne, oily skin, or dandruff , weight gain and pelvic pain, among others.

The ovaries have follicles, tiny sacs filled with liquid that hold the eggs. Each month about 20 eggs start to mature, but usually only one makes it completely. As this one egg grows, the follicle accumulates fluid and as it matures, the follicle breaks open to release. The egg then travels through the fallopian tube for fertilization. When the single egg leaves the follicle, ovulation occurs. In women with PCOS, the ovary does not make all the hormones needed for any of the eggs mature. Follicles grow and accumulate fluid, but neither becomes large enough and remain as cysts. Ovulation does not occur and the progesterone is not made, without which, the woman’s menstrual cycle is irregular or absent. In addition, the cysts make male hormones, which also prevent ovulation.

Treatment
Treatment is based on symptoms, which vary from woman to woman. Many women need a combination of treatments, among which are:

Birth control pills: For those who do not want to get pregnant, they can control menstrual cycles, reduce male hormone levels, and help clear acne. However, the menstrual cycle will become abnormal again to stop the pill. Women may also consider taking a pill that only has progesterone, to control the menstrual cycle and reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.

Diabetes medications: Metformin is used to treat type 2 diabetes. It has also been found to help with PCOS symptoms, but has not been approved by the FDA for this use. Metformin affects the way insulin controls blood glucose (sugar) and lowers testosterone production. Improve abnormal hair growth and ovulation may return after a few months of use. Recent research has shown that other effects such as reducing body mass and improved cholesterol levels. Metformin does not cause a person to become diabetic.

Fertility Drugs: Lack of ovulation is usually the reason for fertility problems in women with PCOS. Several medications that stimulate ovulation can help women become pregnant.

Medicine for increased hair growth or extra male hormones: Medicines called anti-androgens may reduce hair growth and clear acne. A woman with PCOS can take hormonal treatment to prevent new hair from growing.

Surgery is used when a woman does not respond to fertility medicines. The doctor makes a very small cut above or below the navel and inserts a small tool that acts like a telescope into the abdomen. This is called laparoscopy. The doctor punctures the ovary with a small needle carrying a small electric current, which is at risk of developing scar tissue in the ovary. The surgery can lower male hormone levels and help with ovulation. But these effects may last only a few months. This treatment does not help with hair loss or scalp with increased hair growth in other parts of the body.

Changing lifestyle: Maintain a healthy weight by eating well and exercising are other ways women can help manage PCOS. Eat fewer processed foods and added sugars and more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats. This helps improve the natural use of insulin and normalize hormone levels in the body. Even a 10 percent loss in body weight can restore a normal period and make a woman’s cycle more regular.

The diagnosis of PCOS is complex due to the heterogeneity of clinical and biochemical features which has generated controversy. It is therefore important to go to a trustworthy doctor.

The 5968 study of women in Maryland confirms previous findings that people who exercise regularly are less likely to develop cancer.

But when the researchers looked at women aged 18-65 years, who were in the top half in terms of the amount of exercise per week, they found that sleep seems to play an important role in cancer risk

Those who slept less than seven hours each night were 47 percent higher cancer risk than those who slept more physically active women, researchers reported at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.

“We believe it is very interesting and intriguing, although not something that has been widely studied,” James McClain of the National Cancer Institute, part of the U.S. government’s National Institutes of Health, said.

McClain, who led the study, says it is not clear exactly how little sleep can make one more susceptible to cancer, “Although the sufficient sleep has always been associated with health,” he said.

In the U.S. the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised the problem of sleep loss as a public health problem now, as Americans increasingly get less sleep.

Statistics has found that adults surveyed sleep six or fewer hours a night rate that increased from 1985 to 2006.

Experts say chronic sleep loss is associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes, cardiovascular disease, depression, cigarette smoking and excessive drinking.

In addition, research has shown that people who exercise regularly have a reduced risk of breast cancer, colon and other cancers.

Its origin is very remote, was born in ancient China for being there the earliest records of this therapy, but there are also data from your utilazación in Middle Eastern culture.

Today was a French physician, Dr Nogier, who elaborated on their effectiveness through increased knowledge of the application of scientific method, discovering or adding more points of stimulation and its application in many diseases.

When discussing technical reflexologists, we refer to those which apply in certain body parts, in this particular case, “the ear”, but there are many areas in body reflexological, feet, hands, skull, all comply with the principle of the hologram, where a part is equal to the whole process, which is applicable to the functioning of the brain as well.

The popularity of ear has increased its use as adjunctive therapy and often only in the treatment of addictions, obesity, smoking, drugs, etc..

Its application to the approach of traditional Chinese medicine and its theory of five elements, multiply their effectiveness. Used in Chinese hospitals as anesthesia, the method of Ear or the use of special needles to the pinna, as there are various methods of stimulation.

Some of the ailments treated by auriculoterapia are:

Distress, anxiety, depression, addictions, stress, back pain, eye problems, constipation, toothache, joint pains, rheumatism, sciatica, ear infections, allergies, etc.

Unfortunately that has given the false idea that men are not affected by this disease are not as routine tests in women, and mammograms. And since these men ignore this possibility and do not perform self-exams, while if they find something unusual ashamed for playing it typically considered a disease of women.

Treatment involves women as in surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. There have been few studies related to male breast cancer and because this is done the same treatment in women side effects may be different in the male body.

In recent times has aroused more interest on the part of medicine and it is raise public awareness making it known and recommended for men who perform regular self to go to a doctor carried out an analysis, a biopsy and diagnosis.

The rate of mortality is higher because it is ignored and is diagnosed late

Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Osteoarthritis

Dyslipidemia (for example, high concentrations of total cholesterol or high triglycerides)

Type 2 Diabetes

Coronary Artery Disease

Diseases of the gallbladder

Sleep apnea and respiratory problems

Some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon).

Although one of the national health objectives for the coming years is to reduce obesity, current data indicate that the situation is getting worse rather than better. Then we will provide a variety of information designed to help people understand this serious health problem and efforts being made to address it.

Definition of overweight and obesity

Overweight and obesity are two labels for ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height. The terms also identify ranges of weight that have shown an increased risk of certain diseases and other health problems.

For adults, overweight and obesity ranges are determined by using weight and height to calculate a number called “Body Mass Index” (BMI). The BMI is used by most people to calculate their body fat.

The BMI is a measure of weight given person in relation to height you have. Although no distinction is made between components non-fat and fat components of total body mass, this is the procedure most often used to value the risk associated with overweight and obesity.

Between a BMI of 25 to 30 emphasizes an increased risk. People with this weight are characterized by individuals with overweight or overweight.

A BMI of 30 to 35 is considered mild obesity.

A BMI of 35 to 40 represents moderate obesity.

A BMI value above 40 is considered morbidly obese person.

Below 20 kilograms per square meter stand higher rates of lung trouble, and even malnutrition. In this range may include those persons who, for example, suffer from anorexia nervosa.

Therefore we emphasize that the ideal BMI is between 20 to 25 kilograms per square meter. It is important to remember that although BMI correlates with body fat, BMI does not directly measure body fat. As a result, some people such as athletes, can have a BMI that identifies them as overweight even though they have no excess body fat.

Other methods of estimating body fat and body fat distribution include measurements of skinfolds and waist circumference, calculation of waist-hip circumference ratios, and techniques such as ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

In addition, the BMI ranges for children and teens are defined so as to take into account normal differences in body fat between boys and girls, and differences in body fat at different ages.

Risks of Obesity

The BMI is only an indicator of potential health risks associated with being overweight or obese. In assessing someone’s likelihood of developing overweight or obesity, or heart-related diseases, lung and blood, we recommend that you seek other determinants:

The circumference of the waist of the individual (because abdominal fat is a determinant of risk for obesity-related diseases).

Other risk factors for the individual is the predisposition for diseases and conditions associated with obesity (eg high blood pressure or physical inactivity).
