The agreement, in which the County Council participates with 25,000 euros, will aim to develop three research areas this year: the study of the origin and control of mango malformation, the recovery of the traditional variety of tomato and Malaga melon, and sustainable production of avocados, through utilization of organic waste to produce compost.

The malformation of mango crop that has a large presence in the region of Axarquia, along with avocado and cherimoya is a new disease that has spread wherever there is this culture, besides being an extremely serious problem that is causing economic losses, as it can affect both floral barren as the vegetative.

The study will be conducting a survey in different growing areas of the province to detect the disease and establish a map of possible outbreaks.

Another focus of the convention will focus on the recovery of traditional varieties of tomato and melon Malaga for their organically grown. The study includes the cultivation of these species to determine their agronomic potential, assess their productivity and determine their performance against its major pathogens and pests.

The final focus will be to the use of organic waste to produce compost and use it to organic cultivation of avocado, also of great importance in the region.
