Torticollis
What is torticollis?
Torticollis is characterized by the presence of pain on neck movement and is accompanied by inability to turn or move his head. The pain and contraction may radiate to the shoulders or head.
What causes?
Torticollis occurs most often by irritation to cervical nerves, appearing secondarily a contraction or spasm of the neck muscles.
The most common causes of this irritation are: sudden neck movements, traumatic injury (whiplash), poor sleeping positions, anxiety, neck muscle injury at birth, may be secondary to a herniated disc in the cervical and finally to infections bacterial or viral infections.SYMPTOMS
Torticollis may occur following:
Sore neck muscles of the shoulder or back, unable to turn the head which causes usually remain twisted to one side, contraction of the muscles of the neck and chin strange position.
DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis of torticollis is clinically and is unmistakable, because the symptoms are classic.
TREATMENT AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Depend on their causes, but in general may recommend:
Rest of the muscles of the neck (cervical collar if necessary), application of local heat, ultrasound applied in some cases, physical therapy (massage) and muscle relaxants (sometimes).
